Do not choose purely from this table, however. Rider height, terrain, storage, weight, comfort and riding style can all influence which bike is the better choice.
1. Why are electric bikes becoming so popular in the UK?
An electric bike combines conventional cycling with electrical assistance. You still ride and pedal the bicycle, but the motor can reduce the effort required to accelerate, climb hills and maintain momentum.
An e-bike can therefore be useful for people who want to:
- make commuting less strenuous;
- tackle hills more comfortably;
- travel farther than they normally would on a conventional bicycle;
- reduce reliance on a car for shorter journeys;
- return to cycling after spending time away from it;
- carry shopping or everyday equipment more easily; and
- enjoy longer recreational rides.
The important distinction is that an e-bike does not necessarily remove cycling from the experience. A good electric bike can make cycling more accessible and practical.
2. Are ENGWE electric bikes legal in the UK?
This is one of the most important questions to understand before buying any electric bike.
In Great Britain, an electric bike that qualifies as an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) must have pedals capable of propelling it, its motor's maximum continuous rated power must not exceed 250 watts, and electrical assistance must cut off at 15.5 mph (25 km/h). Riders must be at least 14 years old.
If the bicycle meets the EAPC requirements, you do not need a driving licence, vehicle registration, road tax or compulsory motor insurance to ride it.

What happens if an e-bike does not meet EAPC rules?
An electric bike that falls outside the EAPC requirements may be treated as a motor vehicle. That can bring registration, insurance, licensing, helmet and vehicle-approval requirements into play.
A warning about derestricting an e-bike
We recommend keeping a road-going electric bike in its compliant configuration. Modifying a bike so that it exceeds the legal motor-power or assistance-speed limits can change its legal classification and may also increase electrical loads on the battery and drive system.

3. Do not choose an e-bike by motor wattage alone
Two legal UK electric bikes may both use 250W continuous-rated motors yet feel very different to ride.
That is because motor wattage is only one specification. You should also consider:
- Torque: relevant to acceleration, hill climbing and how strongly assistance feels.
- Motor position: hub-drive and mid-drive systems deliver assistance differently.
- Torque sensing: can make assistance respond more naturally to how hard you pedal.
- Bike weight: particularly important if you need to lift or carry the bike.
- Gearing: affects how the bicycle behaves when pedalling under different conditions.
- Tyres: influence comfort, grip, rolling resistance and the general character of the bike.
- Suspension: can improve comfort and control on rougher surfaces.
This is why comparing two e-bikes simply because both display “250W” tells you very little about how they will actually ride.
4. Understanding torque: what does Nm mean?
You will frequently see figures such as 75 Nm, 90 Nm or 100 Nm.
Nm means Newton-metres, a unit used to express torque. For an everyday buyer, it is useful to think of torque as one indication of the motor system's turning force.
Higher torque can be particularly useful when:
- starting from low speeds;
- riding uphill;
- carrying additional weight;
- riding on more demanding surfaces; and
- frequently stopping and starting.
For example, ENGWE's current UK specification lists the EP-2 3.0 Boost at 75 Nm, while the L20 3.0 Pro is offered with a 100 Nm mid-drive configuration. This demonstrates why the same 250 W continuous motor rating does not mean every e-bike will feel identical.
5. Hub motor vs mid-drive: what is the difference?
Hub motor
A hub motor is positioned within one of the wheel hubs. Advantages can include relatively straightforward construction and strong electrical assistance without transferring all motor power through the bicycle's drivetrain.
For many commuting, leisure and mixed-terrain riders, a well-designed hub-drive system can be an excellent solution.
Mid-drive motor
A mid-drive motor is positioned around the crank area near the centre of the bicycle and delivers assistance through the drivetrain.
This can provide a natural riding character and make effective use of the bicycle's gearing, particularly when gradients change.
The ENGWE L20 3.0 Pro, for example, is available in a 250 W mid-drive configuration with up to 100 Nm of torque.
Neither system is automatically better. The more useful question is: which system better suits how you intend to ride?
6. Fat tyres: do you actually need them?
Fat-tyre e-bikes have become one of the most recognisable parts of the electric-bike market, but they should not be chosen purely because they look impressive.
Wider tyres can provide:
- additional cushioning;
- greater confidence on uneven surfaces;
- increased stability;
- useful grip on loose terrain; and
- a substantial, planted riding feel.
The trade-offs can include additional weight and different rolling characteristics compared with narrower city-oriented tyres.

Ask yourself: am I mainly riding smooth city roads, or do I genuinely want a bike capable of handling more varied surfaces?
7. Folding e-bikes: useful, but understand what “folding” means
A folding electric bike can offer significant flexibility and may be useful for home storage, garages and sheds with limited space, motorhomes, caravans or transporting the bike in a suitable vehicle.
But there is an important misconception: folding does not necessarily mean lightweight.
A substantial fat-tyre folding e-bike may fold into a more compact shape while remaining relatively heavy.
If you live in an upstairs flat and expect to carry the bike up several flights of stairs regularly, bike weight should therefore be one of the first specifications you check.
8. Understanding electric-bike range
Manufacturers often quote a maximum range. Treat this as a useful comparison figure rather than a guaranteed distance that every rider will achieve.
Real-world range can change considerably depending on:
- assistance level;
- rider weight;
- luggage;
- hills;
- wind;
- temperature;
- tyre pressure;
- road surface;
- riding speed;
- frequency of stops; and
- battery condition.
Instead of asking only, “What is the maximum range?”, a better question is:
Will this battery comfortably cover my normal journey while leaving a sensible reserve?

12. The most important advice before buying
Do not buy an electric bike simply because it has the largest battery, highest torque figure or most aggressive appearance.
Buy the bike whose characteristics match your journey.
A commuter travelling several miles on ordinary roads has different requirements from someone exploring rural tracks at weekends. A rider storing a bike in a ground-floor garage has different priorities from someone who must carry it upstairs.
And a person prioritising easy mounting may find a step-through model considerably more appropriate than a bike that appears more powerful on paper.
